[size=2]  “莫哈韦3”的成立和“慢潜”的解散几乎是同时的。“慢潜”在1995年发行了专辑《Pygmalion》之后被唱片公司解约,这张专辑的惨淡销量让乐队丢了饭碗,而且使得整个乐队都被迫解散了。当然了,还有一种八卦的说法,说乐队的解散是队中一对男女的美好关系破裂所致……其实这也不是不可能,毕竟在任何类似的工作组合里,一旦男女搭配出现裂痕,干活不累的神话都一定会随之打破。当然,抛开这些钱不钱色不色的事儿不谈,早在“慢潜”还干得像模像样的时候,霍尔斯特德就曾经技痒,利用工作间隙写过一些音乐,而且并没有把它们作为“慢潜”的作品发表。

[size=2]  等到1995年,“慢潜”被艺术与赚钱两不耽误的Creation公司赶走了,霍尔斯特德便和戈斯韦尔、卡琴这二位爷一起录了6首Demo(据说仅用了3天时间),并在其中几首连伴奏都没有的情况下把该Demo寄给了4AD,4AD的人听了以后,居然觉得还不错,于是,“莫哈韦3”这事就算成了。1995年夏天,刚刚提到的那三位爷终于以“莫哈韦3”的名义签约于4AD旗下。

[size=2]  关于他们为什么要管自己叫“mojave 3”,市面上一般都是这么认为的:霍尔斯特德及其他两人觉得他们创作的初衷已经远离了“慢潜”这个名字所蕴涵的意义,所以他们就不想叫“慢潜”了。结果就随便胡起了个“Mojave”的名字,然后为了突出他们3人的特点,又在后面加了“3”——不知道为什么现在他们没变成“莫哈韦5”。“Mojave”本来指的是美国的莫哈韦沙漠,就是在韦姆·文德斯的电影《德州,巴黎》的片头出现的那片安静的沙漠。“莫哈韦3”的音乐也确实像那片温柔的沙漠一样安静。

[size=2]  关于乐队和4AD的签约,还有一种猜想:4AD的老板沃茨·拉塞尔(Vio Watts-Russell)当年的乐队“终极缠绕”(This Mortal Coil)和“莫哈韦3”的轻柔风格实在是有些神似,而“终极缠绕”早在1990年就解散了。于是大家便纷纷瞎猜道:也许拉塞尔是想通过“莫哈韦3”来继续自己的音乐追求……还是让我们清醒一点吧,就算4AD是独立音乐的王国和圣地,它毕竟也是开在罪恶的资本主义国家啊!

[size=2]  我相信,几乎所有“莫哈韦3”的乐迷在一开始都是被他们音乐中的平静和安宁吸引住的,就算一时没有爱不释手,但每当我们烦躁不安的时候,总会想听他们的声音来舒缓神经。对于他们的音乐,普遍的看法是:“莫哈韦3”是一支唯美的民谣乐队。对此霍尔斯特德曾有如下评价:“我知道我们会被别人定义为一支民谣乐队,我可以理解别人为什么这样说。但是我们从来没有尝试过要做一支民谣乐队……事实上,我甚至感觉不到我们是一支乐队,我们都有自己正式的工作……基本上来说,我们只是想在一起写些简单的音乐……”如你所见,霍尔斯特德虽然说了将近一百个字,但还是没能把他话说明白。对音乐的定义并不重要,“莫哈韦3”的音乐的确具有和民谣一样温暖的感觉。

[size=2]  尽管霍尔斯特德只是想写些简单的音乐,但毕竟他们已经红了,所以评论家们肯定不会放过他——老人家现在已经被称为airy folk的创始人之一了。在评论家的耳中,他的音乐融合了英式噪音氛围和美国传统民谣……至于这airy folk和英式噪音氛围是什么,一句两句可说不清楚,但“噪音”这个词用在“莫哈韦3”身上实在是令人觉得匪夷所思……

[size=2]  在“慢潜”的音乐里,你听到的是乐器的声音和人的声音,在电子味儿十足的伴奏中,想听清楚歌词几乎是不可能的。而听过“莫哈韦3”音乐的人都可以发现,他们的音乐元素就是构成歌曲的最基本元素,无论是配器还是作品的结构都是最朴素的,就像千百年来人们流传下来的民歌那样,简单而纯净。“慢潜”时期由设备制造的丰富伴奏不见了,取而代之的是简单的吉他,更为明显的是,“莫哈韦3”重新赋予了歌词重要的意义。在“慢潜”后期的作品中,已经可以经常听到电子乐的loops了,但是“莫哈韦3”的音乐脱离了那种冷冰冰的氛围,又重新回到了最朴素的乐器,温暖的吉他,温暖的低声吟唱……不知不觉中,我们就被深深地打动,简单的东西往往最能动人。“慢潜”像是几个人在的演奏音乐,孤芳自赏的陶醉在自己营造的声音世界里。而“莫哈韦3”是在讲故事,像是一个旅行者在温柔的讲述自己一路上的见闻。总的来说,“慢潜”的东西是音乐,而“莫哈韦3”的东西是歌曲。

[size=2]  两年之后,他们发行了第3张专辑《对旅行者说抱歉》(Excuses For Travellers)。这张专辑的音色很丰富,使用了很多不同的乐器,据他们自己说,这是为了日后演出时舞台效果可以更好。可连乐队成员都没想到,丰富的音色让这张专集专辑听起来是如此的丰满。霍尔斯特德认为,这是乐队已发行的最好的专辑,这张唱片是他所有录过的唱片中最甜美的……就个人来,这张唱片也是我最喜欢的一张“莫哈韦3”作品。专辑中有一首歌《我的艺术人生》(My Life In Art)讲述了一个离家出走的女人的故事,像极了电影《德州,巴黎》,那样的画面感挥之不去。“跟我聊聊boulevards/聊聊你的艺术生活/对,给我讲讲boulevards/因为欧洲似乎总是那么遥远/你看上去很年轻 你谈吐却衰老/振作一点 我也许带你回家/如果你幸运”歌词中那股醇厚而安静的味道,简直就是新时代的《像个女人》(Just Like A Woman)。

[size=2]  2003年9月乐队发行了第4张专辑《调羹与椽木》(Spoon and Rafter)。此时的Mojave 3已经很红了,即使在中国也有很多人引颈期盼这张专辑。《调羹与椽木》带给人们的又是一趟平静的音乐之旅。对于“莫哈韦3”来说,这就够了,并不是所有的东西都需要与时俱进的,时间也会为某些东西停留的……他们的音乐就是这样的东西。在聆听“莫哈韦3”音乐的片刻,别人的时间依然在匆匆地向前飞奔,但在音乐包围中的我们,却可以享受一会儿做时间主人的快感……

[size=2]  他们的几张专辑风格上没有太大的变化。对于这样的一支乐队,很难让大家达成共识,关于“他们的哪张专辑最棒”的讨论也很多,可总是陷入毫无意义的争吵之中。“莫哈韦3”并不是一支会让人有竞争欲的乐队,对于这样一群平静的人,我们最好用平静的心情来回报他们。

[size=2]  如今的“莫哈韦3”有时会被拿来和“烟枪牛仔”(Cowboy Junkies), 尼克·德瑞克(Nick Drake), 鲍勃·迪伦(Bob Dylan)还有格拉姆·帕森斯(Gram Parsons)等人比较,这当然是抬举“莫哈韦3”,但这一“抬举”本身就很能说明问题,而且他们音乐中那化不开的民谣情绪也的确颇具尼尔·扬(Neil Young)的味道……很多人都说过,“莫哈韦3”的音乐要在安静的时候独自聆听,甚至还要用雨水和茶叶来烘托气氛……可我倒觉得,这样形式化的玩意儿和“莫哈韦3”追求的“简单”是背道而驰的。他们的音乐可以随时听,只要你想追求片刻的宁静,他们会为你娓娓道来……

[size=2] 《Ask Me Tomorrow》9首歌的旅程开始于某个临睡状态下的梦想,女主音Rachel在幻觉般轻盈虚无的吉他音效中喃喃自语“Love songs on the radio,Your sweetheart lies in bed,She's dreaming of the things you said…”如此一种耽于梦幻的呓语在缓慢流淌的时间里绵延,它谢绝了表述现实状态的热情,谢绝的现实秩序的可能性,而是半带迷惘的描述梦中可能的情境“She shines tonight her golden light…Lovers all around her,She wears them like her jewels.”歌者是旁观者,是lover,还是She?短短三段歌词,视角发生了跳跃性的变化,因为这是属于梦境的真实。如何解释一个名词"dream-pop"?这首“love songs on the radio”提供了一个源于音乐自身的答案。
此后Rachel梦呓般的歌声始终处于一种若有若无的漂浮状态中,“TOMORROW'S TAKEN”是在追悼一个逝去的未来,回忆和想像留在了另一个人的生活里,明天是注定被带走的。Something good is all I need to feel alive,“Good”是一个被人们经常使用却早已遗忘的词语,有时候我们像身陷绝境中一样期待某种简单的美好。低沉绵长的大提琴占据了“TOMORROW'S TAKEN”的后半部分,对明天的祭奠才刚刚开始。
“CANDLE SONG 3”送给所有人作为圣诞的礼物,没有什么发生改变,没有什么值得改变,选一个节日作为你点亮蜡烛的理由,或者欢乐的理由,在男主音Neil清亮的歌声后,Rachel如薄纱般的声音更像是一种作为背景的乐器精致动人。“YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL”里,Neil继续用黄昏星辰之类的词汇构筑简单而美丽的童话。“Show your light to the real world”要把自己表达给这个世界吗?但是“They can't see, they can't see”。拒绝外面的世界犹如被世界所拒绝,把最真最美的留给自己,“hold it tight”如果你觉得孤独,对自己笑一笑,宁可让外面的世界破碎,也不让自己心碎。
“PICTURES”“WHERE IS THE LOVE”和“MERCY”是对于“背叛”的三种自述,专辑末尾的“Mercy”也是《Ask Me Tomorrow》里旋律最出彩的一首,Neil轻轻唱着“你的生命像一首歌,你却像傻瓜一样生活,而我无法告诉你何去何从”
Mojave 3在《Ask Me Tomorrow》里,旋律,歌词,唱腔,一切都把Indie-pop,Dream-pop演绎得清新,简单而又动人。有人说Mojave 3像Beatles。我想,英国的吉他乐队很难说有谁没继承Beatles的遗产,但是对于Mojave 3,更重要的却是重新解读伟大的传统:由Bob Dylan,Don Mclean重申的民谣传统,由川端康成发挥到极至的唯美叙事传统。
最后我还是要坦白的对所有期待一张摇滚唱片的朋友说;《Ask Me Tomorrow》只是一张简洁而精美的情歌作品集。桀骜不逊,自以为是,愤懑或者激情,这些词语早已为《Ask Me Tomorrow》所远离。它比Sparkle Horse更平和,比Mazzy Star更温暖,它也不会像Mercury Rev那样说“all is dream",因为它本身就是一个梦境,本应属于某个梦幻年代。
