On the 12th January this year, Real Madrid's £25m "Galatico", David Beckham, agreed a surprise move to the MLS in the United States with the L.A. Galaxy for a reported £128m, five year deal. With Beckham the biggest name and highest paid player in the MLS, the pressure is on both him and L.A. Galaxy to perform. Taking over the mantle of head coach from Alexi Lalas, my aim was to get the best of Beckham in his twilight years and win the MLS with the Galaxy. Would Beckham lead the Galaxy to glory and blaze a trail for the world's top footballers to join him in the MLS, or would his big-money move turn out to be something reminiscent of Gary Lineker's Japanese swansong?

Glancing over my squad list, Beckham was clearly the most gifted player in my team, so the key was utilising his ability to the full. Despite Steve McClaren recently declaring that: "when he's playing well, there is no better right-sided player in the world", I deemed it unwise to hang Beckham out on the wing and I moved him into the centre midfield position in a 4-1-3-2 formation. Hopefully this would be the basis for Beckham to spray passes out to the wings and to the forwards from the centre and not confine him to one side of the pitch, although this would mean sacrificing his world-class crossing ability.
My L.A. Galaxy team were all ready amongst the favourites for the new season in April so the addition of Beckham to the squad would be a welcome addition to an experienced squad. The first game against Colorado Rapids was, however, something of a damp squib, despite a Galaxy victory. Beckham showed glimpses of his talent, yet despite some accurate passing and having three shots on target, Beckham failed to shine in the match and ended with a rating of six. Although this was to be short-lived and in the second game, Beckham marked his arrived in the States with some aplomb; imposing himself on the game and spreading passes around the pitch, Beckham curled home a trademark 25 yard free kick to seal a 2-0 win against Salt Lake City. His position in the centre of midfield, although denying the team of his crossing abilities, allowed Beckham to pick the ball up in the centre and create chances from there and his long-range shooting ability saw him regularly have two or three efforts on target. His free kick in the second game was to be the beginning of a purple patch for Beckham in April, as not only did he supply three assists, he also scored five goals, only two of them from set pieces, as the Galaxy sat atop the Western Conference after the first month.
May was a slightly less busier month than the seven games in April, yet the four games produced a flurry of goals and further extended my lead at the top of the table. Although Beckham only scored one goal in May, a 30 yard chip, his superior set-piece ability was soon becoming apparent. Beckham's corners and free kicks have caused the world's best defenders problems down the years and the MLS backlines failed to deal with them any better. Despite not having a target man, these set pieces were the source for three goals, including two during an emphatic 4-1 away victory over Columbus Crew. Beckham was also the assigned penalty taker, in spite of his record with England and had scored two from two going into June.
The last game in May, against Chivas USA, saw Beckham pick up a groin strain that confined him to the sidelines for four weeks, a period that heralded a woeful run of form that saw my lead at the top gradually become decimated by Houston Dynamo, who opened up a four point lead in the league. Beckham was demonstrating a return to form before his injury, yet in spite of this, a controversial return to the England fold was forthcoming, albeit as a substitute. Preferring the speed of Shaun Wright-Philips, Beckham's England comeback was limited to half an hour in a friendly against the Netherlands. But with the MLS being a summer league, Beckham had the chance to impress before September's friendly against Greece.
His return to the Galaxy starting line up coincided with a return to the top of the table by mid-June and despite a month out, saw Beckham become the second highest goal scorer in my team, with seven. Beckham was the architect in the centre of the pitch and his scheming was creating an abundance of chances for the wide players and the forwards. His return saw five straight wins in the league, including a thumping 5-1 victory against Chicago Fire. This game, however, highlighted the sometimes fiery temper of Beckham that has dogged him throughout his career. This game saw him pickup his first red card of the season and although he had only accrued three yellow cards, he had committed 58 fouls in his 23 games so far. But with his output far exceeding that any other player, his return to the team was invaluable going into a busy July.
July saw me extend my lead at the top of the table to nine points and move into the semi-finals of the Lamar Hunt U. S. Open Cup. July was a great month for Beckham and showed he was back to his best and that he had imposed himself on the MLS. His nine goals, matched with an equal number of assists, proved he was the best player in my team, something quantified by his 7.31 average rating, the highest in the team. Something that was also evident was his passing; not only were his assists proving crucial, his range of passing, with a 72% completion rate from midfield, was the basis for much of my attacks. Being in the centre of the pitch, rather than on the wing, he was more involved and although I was missing out on his crossing, his passing from centre midfield was proving to be equally as devastating in supplying the wingers or the strikers with balls. This form was not going unnoticed in England and Beckham was included in the squad for the friendly against Greece, at the expense of my league fixtures in August.
Despite Beckham's absence, I was 12 points clear in the league and although he only made another 30 minute cameo against Greece, he was edging closer to 100 caps. His average rating in August was still over 7.30 and he was the highest average performing midfielder in the MLS. He had also amassed three "man-of-the-match" awards in the league and his nine goals were second only to striker Landon Donovan's 18. I was 13 games unbeaten by the end of August and Beckham was central to my success
His achievements allowed Beckham to retain his place in the England squad for the European Qualifying campaign, with fixtures against Andorra and Macedonia. Although Beckham was in the squad, he did not feature and I missed him for two league games. Despite this, he was back in time for the semi-final and final of the U. S. Open Cup which took place in September, ending with a 2-0 victory for the L. A. Galaxy over Houston in the final. Although Beckham played no direct part in the two goals, he was on the ball more than any other player on the pitch and was instrumental in midfield again. In the middle of the pitch I gave Beckham much creative freedom; and coupled with a "mixed" passing style and encouraging him to play through balls provided much of the attacking spark for the Galaxy. 16 points clear in the MLS with three games left, I decided to experiment and try Beckham wide-right for the last three games of the regular season in October.
Having already secured top spot in the Western Conference, there seemed to be little to play for towards the end of the regular season. I was expecting to see a high number of balls into the box, but being out wide, he was marginalised and saw a lot less of the ball than in previous games. He only had two shots on target in these three games and failed to achieve anything of note that I had come to expect over the course of the season. With this in mind, he was moved back inside into the central midfield berth for the MLS play-offs.
Favourites for victory, the Galaxy brushed aside Houston thanks to two goals from David Beckham corners. The final of the Western Conference play-offs against Dallas saw another Galaxy win and a stunning 30 yard free kick from Beckham. Beckham had now scored 15 goals and had 13 assists going into the final and was undoubtedly the strongest performer for the Galaxy. The final saw me come up against some tough opposition, in the form of D. C. United. A tense and edgy match of few chances was settled by a set-piece and there was only man who was going to be the architect. The Galaxy managed to edge out Washington in a close match, typically a Beckham free kick, in fairytale fashion, brought home the trophy to Los Angeles. The double was a great success for the Galaxy and was a great way to round off Beckham's first season in the MLS.
David Beckham's success in the centre of midfield was compounded by the return on his goals and assists, in addition to his sparkling form. 16 goals, 13 assists and eight "man-of-the-match" awards were a fantastic return from Beckham and proved beyond doubt to his critics that he was not past his best and he quite rightly earned the award for the MLS "Most Valuable Player" and his place in the "team-of-the-season" . Although his chances with England were limited, a return to the squad was a triumph in its own rights, even though he was confined to the bench for long periods. Beckham's first season in the MLS was a huge success and being an integral part of the double-winning team has seen him begin to pay back some of the huge salary he earns. If this success is mirrored in the MLS next season, then David Beckham has every chance of being the driving force behind football in the United States.
