Renault will make Fernando Alonso record earner

Fernando Alonso will be a Renault driver within days on a contract that will make him the highest-paid driver in the history of Formula One thought to be worth as much as £70 million over three years.
The Renault team were not punished after being found guilty last week of spying charges by the FIA. Alonso is understood to have a clause in his contract that would make him free to leave at the end of the first year. He had hoped to be recruited by Ferrari in 2009 but that is an increasingly dim and distant hope after Kimi Raikkonen’s determined drive to the World Championship last season.
The mystery of who partners Lewis Hamilton at McLaren goes on, though. Nico Rosberg, the preferred option of Ron Dennis, McLaren’s team principal, effectively ruled himself out yesterday by signing a deal that will keep him at the Williams Toyota team until 2010. Rosberg had been known to be unhappy with a contract that paid him only £500,000-a-year.
